A glittering gift from the royal family…

We always have a sense of anticipation, wondering what treasures will come over the threshold each day. Recently we have purchased some outstanding unique items of jewellery, from tiaras to diamond rings.

One came from a telephone conversation with a charming lady who stated she had items of jewellery with a royal connection. I was intrigued!

We arranged to view the items at the earliest opportunity. The lady drew us in with her fascinating story and I was bursting with anticipation to see the jewellery at the heart of the tale. Her family had several generations who were connected to, and associated with, service to the royal family.

Out came a very lovely period leather box that contained a most beautiful small diamond brooch that was given to her late mother-in-law by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The lady in question was given it as gift when she and her husband were employed by the royal family at the Sandringham Estate.

She went on to tell me that her husband’s parents were, in fact, married at a private ceremony in the chapel and then held the wedding reception at Buckingham Palace. During her family’s royal employment, she was frequently in very private contact with the Queen Mother and she happened to mention to the Queen Mother that her charming brooch was particularly beautiful. Sometime later the Queen Mother presented it to her for an anniversary gift when she was visiting the Sandringham Estate.

The brooch itself consists of a Victorian old mine-cut diamond to approximately 0.75cts set in a top diamond foliate of cascading leaves. The principal diamond has a spoked bi-colour 18k (750) gold mount intersected by eight smaller matched diamonds contained in an outer halo rim design.

The brooch has several personal letters of provenance that accompany the brooch to a plethora of family members from various members of the royal family including Queen Mary, King George V and the Queen Mother.
