For more than 4,000 years, emeralds have been among the most valuable of all jewels. Colombia, located in northern South America, is the country that mines and produces the most expensive and desirable emeralds for the global market.
For thousands of years, emeralds have been mined and considered one of the world’s most valuable jewels. The first ever recorded emeralds date back to ancient Egypt, where they were particularly admired by Queen Cleopatra.
An ancient Colombian legend exists of two immortal human beings, a man and a woman named Fura and Tena – created by the Muisca god Are in order to populate the earth.
The main mining region in Colombia lay in the Eastern Boyacá Province, part of the Colombian department of Boyacá. Chivor was inhabited by the Muisca in the times before the Spanish conquest. The Muisca were organised in a loose Muisca Confederation, with northern ruler the Zaque of Hunza and the southern Zipa in Bacatá. Rich emerald deposits were known and mined by the Muisca. The emeralds functioned as offer pieces in the Muisca religion, as decoration and as money.
The emerald deposits of Chivor were discovered by Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in 1537 but the mines were abandoned until the 1880s.
Modern Chivor was not founded until December 16, 1930, by Florencio Novoa, but is well established as producing the finest emeralds found on the globe. The desirability influences the high demand and likewise the high price.
At Juels’ Limited we have been very fortunate that the family of a previous high ranking government official attached to the British Consulate in Bogata approached us to buy a large piece of unrefined and cut natural emerald from the Chivor mine.
Following the gemstone laboratory inspection, we are currently in the process of having the rough emerald cut and polished into gemstones of various carats to enable us to turn the emerald into jewellery. Our intent is to have a suite of emerald and diamond jewellery made, as well as several rings and earrings and pendants.
At Juels’ Limited we are able to use our trade connection in both Hatton Garden and Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter to computer assist design (CAD) any bespoke item of jewellery, which can be produced in any metal to suit any budget from the inexpensive to the refreshingly outrageous.
